The Duluth Edison Charter Schools was established in the fall of 1997 with the creation of Kenwood Edison Charter School and Edison Central Junior Academy. The Junior Academy moved to a new building in the fall of 1999 and became Washburn Edison. This same year Raleigh Edison opened their doors in West Duluth. These three schools form the Duluth Edison Charter Schools District, District number 4020.
